Some Tips from Crossroads Sports & Fitness

Should I eat breakfast everyday?

YES, DON'T SKIP THIS MEAL! Breakfast is crucial, not just for nutrition but for weight loss. A recent study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people who ate breakfast (even a bacon and egger) actually ate far fewer calories overall each day than people who skipped it and only ate later in the day.

How can I keep my bones healthy?

Many factors contribute to bone problems. Some are outside your control. If you have a family member who has bone problems, you could also be at risk. Some medical conditions can also make you prone to bone disease. However, there are some things you can control:

  • Get enough calcium and Vitamin D in your diet at every age.
  • Be physically active.
  • Reduce hazards in your home that could increase your risk of falling and breaking bones.
  • Talk with your doctor about medicines you are taking that could weaken bones, such as medicines for thyroid problems or arthritis. Also talk about methods to take medications that are safe for bones and discuss ways to protect bones while treating other problems.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Being underweight raises the risk of fracture and bone loss.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking can reduce bone mass and increase your risks for broken bones.
  • Limit alcohol use. Heavy alcohol use reduces bone mass and increases your risk for broken bones.

Should I train abs everyday?

No, optimal training frequency for abdominal muscles is 3 times per week. Abs are like any other muscle, they need rest time to repair themselves. On the days you do train abs, hit them hard. You should go past the burn and train until you can't possibly do another set. The key to training abs is changing the routine. Vary your sets and reps and mix up different exercises. Don't be afraid to include your own variations. If you need suggestions, ask a fitness trainer. If you stick with only the basic crunch, you won't see significant results, so challenge yourself.
